The most significant exploit related to the PS3's longevity and hacking scene, however, was the "ps3exploit" or more accurately, the webkit exploit. This exploit targeted the WebKit engine used by the PS3's web browser, allowing hackers to execute arbitrary code on the PS3 by visiting a specially crafted webpage. This could lead to the installation of homebrew applications, allowing users to run their own code on the console.
This effectively broke the console permanently. Since the keys were public and the root of trust (Metldr) couldn't be changed without a hardware revision (which never happened for the bulk of the console's life), the PS3 was "eternally" compromised. ps3exploit
