You play as a young Trainer from in the Naranja (Orange) Region – a tropical chain of islands. Professor Cerezo (Spanish for “Cherry”) gives you a choice between Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile (Gen II starters) as your first partner.
The game uses Generation 3 mechanics but includes many Pokémon from Kanto and Johto, keeping the roster consistent with the anime's timeline at that point.
