Sub — Xvid
The AVI (Audio Video Interleave) container format, historically paired with XviD, lacks native support for modern soft-subtitle streams (unlike MKV or MP4). This incompatibility forced content distributors to choose between two inefficient methods: hard-subs (rendering text onto the video frame prior to encoding) or using the obsolete DirectShow filter hacks for soft-subs. This paper examines the compression penalty of these methods.
