The Kumon story began in 1954 in Osaka, Japan. Toru Kumon, a high school math teacher, discovered that his son, Takeshi, was struggling with arithmetic. Dissatisfied with the traditional rote memorization used in schools, Toru began creating handmade worksheets for his son.
