The show didn't set out to make a "gay family" episode. It made a family episode where the parents happen to be gay. The documentary tracks their fear of being seen as different (the clown-themed wedding, the adoption panic) and their eventual pride.
Slow zoom on the Pritchett-Tucker-Dunphy dining table, now empty after a final family barbecue. Sound of laughter echoes. Cut to black.
