Upon hearing Parvati’s grief, Shiva realized his mistake. He promised to bring the boy back to life. He sent his ganas (attendants) to bring the head of the first living creature they found facing north (the direction of wisdom). They returned with the head of a mighty elephant. Shiva placed it on the boy’s body, resurrecting him, and declared him Ganapati —the leader of the ganas .
