Once you feel the clog release (the cable will suddenly move more freely), you’re not done. Slowly retract the cable while still cranking clockwise . Why clockwise? Because if you reverse direction, the cable can unwind and get stuck in the trapway—and then you’re calling a plumber while explaining why your toilet ate a $60 tool.

Remove the toilet lid and set it somewhere safe (a cracked lid adds insult to injury). If the bowl is dangerously full, bail some water into a bucket. Leave just enough to cover the drain opening.

After the battle, clean the auger. Dry it to prevent rust. Uncoil it and inspect the metal for kinks. A kinked cable is weaker and can snap inside the drain next time.

Before you jam anything into the porcelain throne, you must understand the tool in your hands.
