In his later years, Dahl became increasingly concerned with the tension between capitalism and democracy. In Democracy and Its Critics (1989) and On Democracy (1998), he argued:
Dahl began his academic career as an instructor at Yale University in 1940. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army and worked in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the precursor to the CIA.
