Xvid Codec For Vlc ((better)) Jun 2026
VLC does not rely on external DirectShow filters or system-installed codecs. Instead, it bundles (from the FFmpeg project), which contains a complete, optimized Xvid decoder.
To ensure optimal playback of Xvid-encoded videos in VLC, users can configure the codec settings as follows: xvid codec for vlc
| Aspect | Implementation in VLC | | :--- | :--- | | | FFmpeg’s native MPEG-4 decoder (enabled by default) | | Multi-threading | Supported (frame-level and slice-level) | | B-frame handling | Full support (including packed bitstream in AVI) | | Error resilience | Basic; damaged Xvid files may show artifacts but rarely crash | | Hardware acceleration | Not applicable (Xvid is software-decoded only; no GPU decoding exists for MPEG-4 ASP) | VLC does not rely on external DirectShow filters
