At 2:00 AM, the studio entered the 'Chill Zone.' Mikey dimmed the lights. The countdown hit the Top 20.

"At number one... a tribute to a Rose. A tribute to a Princess. A tribute to a year of goodbyes. Elton John. 'Candle in the Wind 1997.'"

Mikey took a deep breath. He looked at the clock. It was nearly 4:00 AM.

Around #50, the energy shifted. Mikey threw in a double-shot of the year's defining export: Boy Bands. Backstreet Boys "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" bled into *NSYNC’s tearjerker, "I Want You Back." The station’s transmitter hummed, sending the harmonized pleas of five guys in matching outfits across the frozen cornfields.

He cued the first track. It was low on the list, maybe number 98. The opening riff of The Verve Pipe’s "The Freshmen" crackled through the monitors.
