The building itself is a stunning example of Renaissance Revival architecture, designed by the prolific theatre architect Thomas W. Lamb. For decades, it served as a cinematic palace and live performance venue. It later became known as the Imperial Theatre and, eventually, the Canon Theatre, before being renamed the Ed Mirvish Theatre in 2011 to honor the late Ed Mirvish, the eccentric businessman and philanthropist who saved several of the city's historic stages from demolition.
