Mike turned it over in his hand. “We’ve lived here eight years. The previous owners had a little girl. She’d be… what, fifteen now?”

And so, armed with a flashlight and a reluctant sense of adventure, they stepped into the backyard. The air was thick with the smell of damp soil and jasmine. The exterior cleanout—a small, white plastic pipe stub with a square knob—stood near the foundation, half-hidden by overgrown mint. Mike twisted the cap off with a grunt.

They stared at the duck. It seemed almost mournful, trapped for nearly a decade in a lightless world of grease and murk. Sarah felt a strange pang of tenderness. She washed it properly with dish soap, dried it, and set it on the windowsill above the sink.

Sarah fetched a bucket of water and rinsed it off.

“We’ve never had a rubber duck,” Sarah said.

For stubborn organic matter, caustic soda creates a chemical reaction that eats through blockages.

Mike retrieved it with a pair of barbecue tongs. The cover was swollen, the pages stuck together like a brick of gray pulp. But the first page, written in a child’s loopy purple marker, was still legible: “The Secret Book of Evie Hart, Age 8. Do NOT read!!!”
