It is a tactical performance: participants claim a surname historically denied to them by white, wealthy society. By naming herself after Christian Dior, Gi Gi Dior does not simply pay homage to a designer; she occupies the surname, arguing that the elegance, discipline, and artistry of the House of Dior can be embodied by a Black, queer, trans woman in a downtown ballroom just as authentically as on an Avenue Montaigne runway.
