The story is set in the Charenton Asylum during the Napoleonic era. The Marquis de Sade (Geoffrey Rush) is an inmate who has turned the asylum into his personal writing room. Despite his imprisonment, he continues to publish his "blasphemous" and erotic novels with the help of a young, innocent laundress named Madeleine (Kate Winslet), who smuggles his manuscripts out to a local printer.
