To avoid parity altogether, some advanced solvers use techniques during edge pairing or during the last few steps of reduction. But learning the algorithms is simpler.
It prevents the frustration of thinking you made a mistake earlier in the solve. You didn't break the cube; you simply encountered a state that exists in the 4x4 geometry but not in the 3x3 geometry.
