The story takes place in 19th-century France, during the June Rebellion of 1832. The libretto follows the journey of Jean Valjean, a former prisoner who seeks redemption after being shown kindness by Bishop Myriel. Valjean's story is intertwined with those of Fantine, a young woman forced into prostitution; Javert, a police inspector determined to capture Valjean; and the students of the June Rebellion, who fight for freedom and social change.
