The fruit from the tree gives him a power boost, and the entire Z-Fighter team (Yamcha, Tien, Krillin, etc.) gets a moment to shine before Goku finishes it with a Spirit Bomb.

Between the end of Dragon Ball and the start of DBZ . Plot: Garlic Jr., a immortal being seeking revenge on Kami, kidnaps Gohan to steal the four-star Dragon Ball. Goku and Piccolo must form an uneasy alliance to save the boy. Why watch? It introduces Garlic Jr. (who later gets a filler arc in the anime).
