The story follows Garnik, a former gangster in his late twenties, released from prison after a decade. To fulfill a promise to his dying mother, he must return to his old high school to complete the 12th grade. The school is now run by a corrupt principal who tolerates bullying, extortion, and drug dealing among students. Garnik’s appearance – tattoos, scars, and a quiet, intimidating manner – shocks the staff and students. At first, he is isolated and ridiculed. But when he defends a weak student from a gang of school bullies, his street skills become an unlikely form of justice. Over time, Garnik struggles to learn algebra, control his violent reflexes, and earn a diploma. The climax comes when the school bully’s older brother, a real mafia figure, attacks the school. Garnik must choose between reverting to gangster violence or using non-lethal means to protect the students.
