When most people hear “Croatoan,” they think of the vanished Roanoke Colony and the single word carved into a post. But the Croatoan people themselves were never lost. Today, their descendants are recognized as the (or, in some contexts, the Croatans ), and they continue to assert their identity, culture, and history in coastal North Carolina.
The (also known as the Hatteras Indians) is not recognized as a singular, distinct tribal entity today, but their descendants are a vital part of several modern Native American communities . While the tribe’s name is famous for its association with the "Lost Colony" of Roanoke, the story of the Croatoan people is one of survival and integration rather than disappearance.
