This is the brutal curse. Will becomes a supernatural being, his flesh slowly taking on the features of the sea (barnacles, coral, and sea grass), just as Davy Jones did. The only anchor to his humanity is his love for Elizabeth.
Eventually, the breaking of the Trident of Poseidon in the fifth film shattered all sea curses, finally freeing Will from his bond to the Dutchman and allowing him to return to Elizabeth and their son, Henry, as a mortal man. Using his knowledge of the Dutchman's unique abilities, Will managed to outmaneuver the Interceptor, and the Dutchman's crew launched a decisive counterattack. He stood at the helm of the Flying Dutchman , his boots fused in place, barnacles and coral acting as the shackles of his office. Unlike his predecessor, the fearsome Davy Jones, Will did not look like a monster. He looked like a memory. Where Jones was a tangle of tentacles and wrath, Will was sculpted stone and deep-sea kelp. The Interceptor drew closer, and Will could see Barbossa standing on her deck, a sly grin spreading across his face. Will knew that look, that tone...this wasn't going to be a friendly meeting.
