The director famously stated that he was "tired of dinosaurs" by the time he made the film, and that fatigue shows in the film's cynical, cruel tone. The character of Nick Van Owen (played by Vince Vaughn) is an eco-terrorist whose actions directly cause the deaths of dozens of mercenaries, blurring the lines between hero and villain. The dinosaurs, too, are meaner. The raptors are no longer just intelligent hunters; they are depicted as malicious tormentors. Unlike the first film, which was based on a standalone novel, Jurassic Park II came about due to immense pressure from fans and the studio. Michael Crichton had not originally planned to write a sequel, but he eventually penned the novel The Lost World in 1995. Interestingly, Crichton had to "resurrect" the character of Ian Malcolm, who had died at the end of the first book, to provide a bridge for the new story.
