Jesse Pinkman. The character who was supposed to die in Season 1. Aaron Paul took a caricature of a "junkie loser" and turned him into the beating heart of the show. While Walt was the one who knocks, Jesse was the one who got knocked down, over and over again, yet retained a shred of humanity that Walt sold for a barrel of cash. The relationship between them is the most toxic, co-dependent, heartbreaking brotherhood in TV history. Walt plays the father figure, manipulates Jesse, saves him, endangers him, poisons his girlfriend's son, and yet, we see why Jesse stays. He has nothing else. And in the end, when Walt finally frees him from the literal chains of the Brotherhood, the scream that Jesse lets out as he drives away—an animalistic, broken roar—is the only happy ending the show could realistically offer. He survives, but he is scarred forever.

Then there is Skyler. The internet’s villain for over a decade, unfairly subjected to the vitriol of fans who couldn’t separate Anna Gunn’s brilliant performance from their own worship of Walter. Skyler was the moral anchor that Walt dragged the show down with. She was the character who asked the questions the audience ignored: What about the family you are destroying while trying to "save" them? Her descent into the "drowned woman" arc, floating in the pool, smoking cigarettes while staring into the abyss, is a masterclass in portraying the suffocation of being married to a monster. torrent breaking bad
